Wallpaper* celebrates 20 years of the A.B.C. Armchair by Flexform
16/10/2018
To honour two decades of the 'A.B.C.' system by Flexform, designed by Antonio Citterio, and the more recent addition of its armless, minimalist relative, the 'A.B.C.D.' chair, also by the same designer, the famous design magazine Wallpaper* has created an evocative photo shoot.
The magazine chose the Dessau Bauhaus, Germany, as a scenic location, travelling to the Master's Hauses by Bauhaus founder, Walter Gropius, who gave life to the modernist architectural movement that inspired some of the most significant furnishings in the history of design, including these two Flexform icons.
Looking to the power and energy of electricity and machines, the manufacture of aeroplanes cars and ocean liners, the Bauhaus architects advocated the use of industrial grade tubular steel and concrete, a brand new material for the time.
The spirit of the Modern Movement is evident in the elegant leather and tubular steel architecture of Flexform's iconic 'A.B.C.' seating system, designed in 1996.
The elegantly masculine, block construction of the Flexform chairs echoes the cubist lines of the German buildings – the spirit of the Modern Movement distilled into a timeless luxury design icon.
