Riva1920's Pangea table at Eataly, Turin
12/01/2016
On its way back from Milan, the table Pangea, especially created for Riva1920 by Michele De Lucchi on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition in 2015, arrives at the square outside Eataly Lingotto (Turin).
Measuring a staggering 80 square-meters and made in the precious Kauri wood sourced from the undergrowth of the thousand year old New Zealand rainforest, the Pangea table is made up of 19 wood profiles and stands on 271 legs made of Briccola, the oak mooring posts typical of the Venice lagoon.
The idea for this table comes from the Pangea, a supercontinent thought to have assembled from earlier continental units and began to break apart about 175 million years ago forming the present-day continents. Pangea was made especially for the Expo, metaphorically representing a return to our primeval origins and to the unity of man, without boundaries, prejudices and differences, and centering on the universal theme of food.
Eataly Turin is currently exhibiting this great piece of workmanship by Riva 1920, recently on display at Expo 2015 in Hall Zero, where it was admired by more than 4 million visitors. Even after Expo has come to a close, the values represented by Pangea - sustainable food sourcing and the universal role of food for mankind - come once again to the fore.
The official opening of this impressive installation was held on Tuesday, December 15 at 11am.
